So indelibly has the searing Muscle Shoals-cut cheating ode “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To Be Right” been burned into our collective consciousness that it all but threatens to overshadow everything else that Luther Ingram recorded for Johnny Baylor’s Ko Ko label. That’s a shame, because Luther was a veritable hitmaking machine from 1969 to 1978. He scored 17 R&B chart entries for Ko Ko, three of them cracking the Top Ten and every one memorably spotlighting his mellifluous, Sam Cooke-influenced vocal charms. He was also a gifted songwriter, teaming with Mark Rice to co-write the Staple Singers’ classic empowerment anthem “Respect Yourself.” Luther Ingram will always be remembered first and foremost for his number one R&B smash, yet his entire Ko Ko catalog is spectacular.
(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To Be Right: The Best Of Luther Ingram contains every one of Luther’s chart entries for Ko Ko Records. It’s the most extensive authorized domestic release of his work to date.
