Best remembered for their 1970 AM pop classic “Green-Eyed Lady” and their mid-seventies top ten hit “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You,” Sugarloaf (named after the Colorado ski resort) was formed in 1969 in Denver by singer/keyboardist Jerry Corbetta. Signed to Liberty Records on the strength of their demos, Sugarloaf recorded their self-titled debut album in 1970. The single “Green-Eyed Lady” – co-written by Corbetta and based on a piece of a scale exercise in a practice book – became a national hit, eventually peaking at number three on the pop charts. After two failed follow-up albums, the group disbanded. During this period Cobetta pursued a solo career including a stint as one of the Four Seasons with Frankie Valli.
Reforming Sugarloaf in 1975, the group recorded an album for the obscure Claridge label. At the last moment, Corbetta brought in a song he wrote expressing his frustrations with the music industry, “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You” became one of the top hits of 1975, and received the most airplay of any track that year.
